It was October 2005 when the news began reporting that the Iranian president denied the Holocaust had happened and said the state of Israel should be wiped off the map. People probably thought many things, as planned. An example amongst individuals who believe they are on a ‘good’ side could have been; ‘this nut job’s playing into their hands with this kind of rhetoric.’ Since then “the Cuban missile crisis in slow motion” as one US Harvard academic Graham Allison has described the Iran/US imbroglio, has ratcheted up to high alert with Seymour Hersh of the New Yorker reporting that the White House is all prepared for nuclear strikes. It would take just 12 hours to deploy nuclear weapons for a bunker busting strike that would kill a million Iranians according to conservative estimates commissioned by the Pentagon. Nuclear armed planes were now on constant alert and public opinion has been framed around those mad, mad statements on Israel by Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.(محمود احمدی‌نژاد–) But what if the pronouncements by Ahmadinejad, that cast him as this season’s baddie incarnate, had been a) mistranslated and b) taken out of context? Keep reading, it’s as clear as day… When properly translated the Iranian president actually calls for the removal of the regimes that are in power in Israel and in the USA as a goal for the future. Nowhere does he demand the elimination or annihilation of Israel. He called for greater governance for Palestine. The word map does not even feature. And the president makes plain that the Holocaust happened, but, he argues western powers have exploited the memory of the Holocaust for their own imperialistic purposes. What the media ran with is complete deception. Media, those between us and the reality. The deception has been aided by the fact that generally the US and other media use an ‘independent’ company called Middle East Media Research Institute (Memri) for translating Middle Eastern languages. Memri is owned by two right-wing neo-con Israelis: Meyrav Wurmser, the wife of one of Dick Cheney’s aides (and ex-special assistant to John Bolton), David Wurmser an Israeli Intelligence officer,) Colonel Yigal Carmon.It is the fact that the Israeli army (presumably military intelligence) has also used this mistranslation tactic in the past. And once Ahmadinejad had been brushed with the wacko Jew destroyer tag, it was a short hop, skip and ein Sprung before he was alongside Adolf Hitler in the pantheon of baddies. Like Milosevic and Hussein before him, Ahmadinejad’s Hitler comparison is as sure a sign war was to be presented as imminent, at least for some time if not in actuality. Like Hitler in reality, Ahmadinejad doesn’t rule Iran, nor does he control its foreign or military policy. In Iran, they have another titular layer presented as the man in charge, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran is a theocracy, and Khamenei is the theocrat-in-chief. Ahmadinejad lies in Iran’s political hierarchy thus, no-one can run for the presidency without the approval of Khamenei and the Guardian Council, a group of six clerics and six conservative jurists that are selected by Khamenei.The more the world seems to change, be at odds, fight and war, the more it looks homogeneous. This is the nature of the much awaited ‘oneness’ that so many are now collapsing on as the ‘answer’.

Barely
a day goes by that one can avoid reading or hearing yet another Israeli, American or British warhawk regurgitate the broken record that Iran’s President Ahmadinejad threatened to “wipe Israel off the map,” framed in the ridiculous context that Israeli’s are being targeted for a second holocaust. This baseless rallying call for conflict holds about as much credibility as Dick Cheney’s assertion that Saddam Hussein was planning to light up American skies with mushroom clouds.

Today it’s the turn of would-be future British Prime Minister David Cameron, leader of the Conservative Party, who repeated the “wipe Israel off he map” fraud in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, using it to qualify his refusal to rule out a military strike on Iran under a Tory government.

Did Ahmadinejad really threaten to “wipe Israel off the map” or is this phrase just another jingoistic brand slogan for selling the next war in the Middle East?

The devil is in the detail, wiping Israel off the map suggests a physical genocidal assault, a literal population relocation or elimination akin to what the Nazis did. According to numerous different translations, Ahmadinejad never used the word “map,” instead his statement was in the context of time and applied to the Zionist regime occupying Jerusalem. Ahmadinejad was expressing his future hope that the Zionist regime in Israel would fall, not that Iran was going to physically annex the country and its population.

To claim Ahmadinejad has issued a rallying cry to ethnically cleanse Israel is akin to saying that Churchill wanted to murder all Germans when he stated his desire to crush the Nazis. This is about the demise of a corrupt occupying power, not the deaths of millions of innocent people.

The Guardian’s Jonathan Steele cites four different translations, from professors to the BBC to the New York Times and even pro-Israel news outlets, in none of those translations is the word “map” used. The closest translation to what the Iranian President actually said is, “The regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time,” or a narrow relative thereof. In no version is the word “map” used or a context of mass genocide or hostile military action even hinted at.

The acceptance of the word “map” seemingly originated with the New York Times, who later had to back away from this false translation. The BBC also wrongly used the word and, in comments to Steele, later accepted their mistake but refused to issue a retraction.

“The fact that he compared his desired option – the elimination of “the regime occupying Jerusalem” – with the fall of the Shah’s regime in Iran makes it crystal clear that he is talking about regime change, not the end of Israel. As a schoolboy opponent of the Shah in the 1970’s he surely did not favor Iran’s removal from the page of time. He just wanted the Shah out,” writes Steele.

“It’s important to note that the “quote” in question was itself a quote, writes Arash Norouzi, “they are the words of the late Ayatollah Khomeini, the father of the Islamic Revolution. Although he quoted Khomeini to affirm his own position on Zionism, the actual words belong to Khomeini and not Ahmadinejad. Thus, Ahmadinejad has essentially been credited (or
blamed) for a quote that is not only unoriginal, but represents a viewpoint already in place well before he ever took office.”

Professor Juan Cole concurs, arguing, “Now, some might say, “So he didn’t say, ‘wipe off the map,’ he said ‘erase from the page.’ What’s the difference? Anyway he’s saying he wants to get rid of Israel. Ahmadinejad was not making a threat, he was quoting a saying of Khomeini and urging that pro-Palestinian activists in Iran not give up hope — that the occupation of Jerusalem was no more a continued inevitability than had been the hegemony of the Shah’s government. Whatever this quotation from a decades-old speech of Khomeini may have meant, Ahmadinejad did not say that ‘Israel must be wiped off the map’ with the implication that phrase has of Nazi-style extermination of a people. He said that the occupation regime over Jerusalem must be erased from the page of time.”

Let’s consider for a moment that Ahmadinejad really
does wish to initiate a nuclear war on Israel, is this feasible? It
would be like Paris Hilton picking a fight with Mike Tyson. The CIA’s own estimates put Iran five to ten years away from being able to produce one nuclear bomb even if they were in the planning stages now, which is highly unlikely given that international inspectors have found no evidence of such a program and CIA satellite imagery
also shows no proof of nuclear arms. Contrast this to an Israeli
arsenal of anything up to 200 launch ready nukes allied to the might of
the U.S. which has nearly 6,000 active warheads not to mention
so-called “mini-nukes.”

While it can be
reasonably argued that Iran is seeking a nuclear weapon at some point
in the future, to then claim that this means Ahmadinejad wishes to
enact a second holocaust is an unfathomable leap of logic. The real
reason for any nation in that region trying to acquire a nuclear weapon
is for self defense, because they are surrounded by other hostile
powers that already have the bomb.

Returning
to the “wipe Israel off the map hoax,” loathe are we to forget another
of the commercial jingles concocted for hoodwinking Americans into
attacking a certain other Middle Eastern country – “he used weapons of
mass destruction against his own people,” referring of course to Saddam
Hussein’s alleged role in the Halabja massacre where Iraqi Kurds were
gassed. In reality, as former CIA analyst Stephen Pelletiere has revealed,
Halabja came as a result of a battlefield exchange between the Iranians
and the Iraqis after the Kurds had sided with the Iranians and allowed
them to enter the city. According to the DIA’s own report at the time,
the type of gas that killed the Kurds was not used by the Iraqis but
was used by the Iranians. The incident was a tragedy of war, not a
directed program of genocide at the behest of Saddam Hussein.

Whenever
Bush administration officials and others used Halabja as a pretext for
war, the mass media routinely failed to mention the DIA report, just as
they have failed to provide any balance on the real meaning of
Ahmadinejad’s statement, despite the fact that it is completely
distorted almost every day and used as a call to arms as well as a
propagandistic ploy to convince western populations that dark skinned
invaders are hell-bent on their wholesale destruction.

Hundreds of children ‘vanishing’!

BBC | Hundreds of African boys have disappeared from London schools, police investigating the murder of a boy whose torso was left in the Thames have said.

Scotland Yard asked London education authorities how many black boys aged four to seven had vanished from school. Between July and September 2001, 300 had disappeared, and police fear thousands may go missing annually.

Child welfare experts say the figures hint at the scale of child trafficking, sometimes for labour or benefit fraud.

A previous BBC investigation found some African children were being held by their parents’ creditors, so they could claim extra benefits.

‘Lost in the system’

The boy found in the River Thames in September 2001 – called Adam by police – is thought to have been the victim of a ritual killing after being brought to London from Nigeria.

Detective Chief Inspector Will O’Reilly said inquiries revealed 300 black boys of a similar age to Adam had not reported back to school in the three months before his death and were “lost into the system”.

“It is a large figure – far more than we anticipated when we started this line of inquiry,” Mr O’Reilly said.

Of the missing boys, 299 came from Africa and one from the Caribbean.

Despite an international search, police were able to find only two of them, Mr O’Reilly said. Most of those questioned said the children had returned to Africa.

While there is nothing to suggest these children have been murdered, a lack of immigration records makes them almost impossible to trace, police say.

The Truth about the “Terror Plot”…. and the new “pseudo-terrorism” I am disappointed to say that so far there has been very little serious critical discussion, grounded in factual analysis, of the alleged “Terror Plot” foiled on the morning of Wednesday, 10th August 2006. Except for a few noteworthy comment pieces, such as Craig Murray’s critical speculations published by the Guardian last Friday, the mainstream media has largely subserviently parroted the official claims of the British and American governments. This is a shame, because inspection of the facts raises serious problems for the 10/8 official narrative.

No Imminent Plot
On the basis of the “Terror Plot”, Prime Minister Tony Blair is planning “to push through 90-day detention without charge for terror suspects.” Home Secretary Dr. John Reid has ordered the draft of new anti-terror legislation that would suspend key parts of the Human Rights Act 1998, to facilitate the indefinite detention of terrorism suspects in the UK without charge or trial. The law is planned to apply also to British citizens. And since 10th August, Britain was on its highest “critical” state of alert, which indicates the threat of an imminent terrorist attack on UK interests. Only in the last few days was it lowered back down to “severe”.

The stark truth is that the “Terror Plot” narrative has been thoroughly, hopelessly, politicized. There was never any evidence of an imminent plot. A senior British official involved in the investigation told NBC News on 14th August that:

We should be sceptical about this alleged plot, and wary of politicians who seek to benefit.

Nine days on, nobody has been charged with any crime. For there to be no clear evidence yet on something that was “imminent” and would bring “mass murder on an unbelievable scale” is, to say the least, peculiar. A 24th person, arrested amid much fanfare on Tuesday, was quietly released without charge the following day.

Media analysis has been full of information from police and security sources. By and large journalists are honourable in this kind of reporting. Their sources, unfortunately, are not – viz the non-existent ricin, the Forest Gate “chemical weapons vest”, or Jean Charles de Menezes leaping the barriers. Unlike the herd of security experts, I have had the highest security clearance; I have done a huge amount of professional intelligence analysis; and I have been inside the spin machine. And I am very sceptical about the story that has been spun.

None of the alleged terrorists had made a bomb. None had bought a plane ticket. Many did not have passports. It could be pretty difficult to convince a jury that these individuals were about to go through with suicide bombings, whatever they bragged about on the net.

What is more, many of those arrested had been under surveillance for more than a year – like thousands of other British Muslims. And not just Muslims. Like me. Nothing from that surveillance had indicated the need for early arrests.
